Formed in late summer 2016, Signature Hardware Community (SHC) is a group of service-minded employees who focus on giving back to the community. Signature Hardware supports an employee-run committee that organizes and provides monthly volunteer or donation opportunities for associates and their family and friends. SHC seeks to partner with community organizations to help those in need while also encouraging associates to explore independent volunteer opportunities. During the first six months, SHC sponsored charities or events that benefitted children and families in need.
For our inaugural event, in October 2016 we sponsored Devougrass, a music and arts festival in Covington, Ky. that benefits the Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky. This annual event hosts free activities for families and children as well as spaces for local arts and crafts vendors to sell merchandise. More than 50 SHC members volunteered to help set up and clean up after the event.
In November, more than 40 SHC members volunteered their Saturday morning to work the Prepare Affair, sponsored by People Working Cooperatively. This annual volunteer event brings together more than 3,000 volunteers locally to help low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners prepare their homes for winter. This was the second year that volunteers from Signature Hardware donated their time to work at this event. Volunteers helped by raking leaves, cleaning gutters and completing other small tasks.
To round out 2016, SHC sponsored a Giving Tree on site at Signature Hardware’s main office and warehouse building. SHC collected items requested specifically for the children of the Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky. Items such as pants, socks, underwear, toiletries, cleaning items and board games were collected and donated to help the facility continue to provide for its residents.
In the first six months, more than 100 SHC volunteers worked at various events in addition to hosting on-site donation opportunities for coats, a giving tree, homeless family resource bags, and canned food.
Looking ahead in 2017, SHC will be providing opportunities each month for employees and their friends and family to either volunteer or make a difference in the community through donation drives. We will be walking in the local July 4th parade, hosting a back-to-school supply drive, sponsoring a summer food program, organizing letter writing for local emergency service workers and deployed military, and donating items to causes that benefit local children and families in need, active military and veterans as well as non-profit animal rescues.
